Ask Dr. Ceren: Whistle Blowers And Protest Marchers
While whistle blowers and protest marchers feel strongly about a cause, the lone whistle blower risks far more than a possible arrest or notoriety.
He may be called a “tattle-tale” or a “narc.” He is not considered a team player. Motivated by strong moral and ethical conviction and with courage, he willingly places himself in a risky position in which a job or personal and professional relationships must be severed. The lone whistle-blower is willing to assume the risk of social and professional isolation to right a wrong. She is willing to risk career suicide to satisfy her moral convictions. History has shown that blowing the whistle on corporate fraud is tantamount to career suicide. Now, hopefully this is changing
Protest marchers enjoy the support and camaraderie of like-minded others, whereas the whistle-blower is usually a loner in his protest.
